Francis Edwin Shober (1831-1890) of Salem, NC, entered the University in 1848, joined the Dialectic Society, and received his BA in 1851. He was elected to the NC House of Commons (1862-64) and the US Senate (1869-73). He served as a University trustee from 1862 to 1868.
